State-of-the-art green data center features low PUE value and the latest DC technology. Built on green land.

With its Zurich West data center, the green.ch group has built a green data center on green land that is also highly advanced from an ecological viewpoint. The data center was built according to the latest energy optimization findings. Efficient devices and technologies minimize power consumption, waste heat is used for the office building and plans are in place for solar power generation. The new data center also uses the cost-saving DC technology. All these measures result in an outstanding PUE value.

The green computing measures in the Zurich West data center at a glance:

PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) factor of 1.4 thanks to:

  • Optimized data center architecture
  • Latest generation of air conditioners: free cooling, cold aisle controllers
  • KTI project EoD (the Confederation’s innovation promotion agency) with the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW)

Waste heat utilization in the office building

  • Built-in heat exchangers
  • Connections to the office building prepared
  • Photovoltaic system: plans in place

Innovative DC technology: starting in 2012

In addition to conventional AC technology, the Zurich West data center will be adding a new innovative DC energy distribution system which will be installed by ABB starting in 2012. This system offers numerous ecological and economical benefits:

  • Reduces cooling requirements
  • Realizes an electricity distribution savings of 10% to 20% compared to AC technology
  • Saves space and is less complex
  • Reduces the costs of the entire operation
  • Improves reliability

Suitable racks are now available from HP and IBM and can be used in the Zurich West data center in a defined zone starting in 2012.
