3 steps to check the speed of your internet connection
Cable connection instead of WLAN
Before the test, connect your computer to your router via a network cable instead of via WLAN. Disconnect all devices from the WLAN router and turn off the WLAN at the router. This will tell you the actual Internet speed of your connection.
Keep computer up to date
Before the test, make sure that your computer's operating system and browser are up to date and that there are no pending updates. Restart the computer and open a browser (e.g. Chrome, Edge or Firefox).
Start the speed test on the internet speedtest page from Green. Perform 2-3 measurements to detect any inconsistencies.
What you should consider during the speedtest
- Use a LAN cable with at least Cat 5e for the speedtest. With WLAN, the measurement results are faulty and inaccurate.
- For more meaningful results, run the speedtest on different devices and with different web browsers.
- Deactivate any web browser firewall before the speedtest.
- Some hardware components such as routers, network cables or network cards are only designed for speeds of up to 1,000 Mbit/s. Technically, a maximum speed of 940 Mbit/s can be achieved in this case.

How can I improve my WLAN reception?
Position the router optimally: The higher you place the router, the better. Place the router centrally in your home so that the WLAN signal is strong enough in all rooms.
Update router firmware: Regularly update the firmware of your WLAN router or activate the automatic updates on the router.
Install WLAN repeater: In rooms where WLAN reception is not optimal, you can use a WLAN repeater. Most of these WLAN repeaters are simply plugged into a free socket and connected to the WLAN router. A simple way to optimally cover every room with WLAN
Avoid sources of interference: Many routers use the 2.4 GHz band for radio transmission. This frequency is also used by devices such as microwaves, Bluetooth devices and cordless phones. Therefore we recommend to use the 5 GHz band if supported by your router and your devices. Thick reinforced concrete walls, other electrical devices and metal objects can also interfere with WLAN reception.
What is the difference between download speed and upload speed?
What is download speed? The download speed indicates how much data you can download per second. With a higher download speed, you can download videos faster from the internet and enjoy streaming services such as Netflix or YouTube in higher quality.
What is upload speed? The upload speed indicates how much data you can send per second. With a higher upload speed, you can upload videos to YouTube faster and provide your video image in video chat in higher quality.
Why is it possible that the measured internet speed does not correspond to my subscription?
Sometimes the result of the speedtest shows a lower speed than you should get with your current internet subscription. One reason could be your connection at home, with which higher speeds are technically not possible. Other reasons may concern your test setup. Please note the above tips for performing the speedtest.
How does an internet speedtest work?
A speedtest determines how fast you can upload and download files with your current internet connection. To do this, test data is sent to a server (measuring upload speed) and downloaded from a server (measuring download speed).
How accurate and reliable is an internet speedtest in the browser?
Speedtests performed in an internet browser are not 100% reliable and accurate. There are many factors that can influence the result. Especially for subscriptions with more than 100 Mbit/s bandwidth, there can be deviations from the actual speed. To get a more accurate result, a special measuring station must be connected directly to the router. This station has a direct URL to the speed test server of an operator. Another option: A server is connected directly to the router of site A and another server is connected directly to the router of site B. At least the bandwidth you want to measure must be available at both sites. In this way, the down- and upload speed can be measured directly from server to server.
