Optimizations within systems, however, often remain unnoticed by customers. For example, cooling systems and UPS batteries are regularly replaced by newer, more environmentally friendly and more powerful devices – completely unnoticed, without any interruptions and at no extra cost.
However, we must be careful, as the market is now being crowded by technologies that will revolutionize the data center business.
The 5G mobile network, the data center and an application
Opinions are split as regards the 5G mobile network. On one side stands the critics who are warning against the effects of the new technology on human health. On the other side are the innovators who recognize the potential offered by the new mobile network speeds, e.g.
the self-driving car will revolutionize mobility. In order for the self-driving car to be launched safely, the vehicles must be able to communicate with one another instantly and logically and be able to access external information sources. These criteria can be fulfilled using 5G technology. A comprehensive network will be able to transfer the data reliably and in real time.
The data must not just be transferred, however, it must also be processed by artificial intelligence. And this is where data centers come into play. The driving itself should be carried out autonomously, but the supply of weather and traffic data as well as the coordination of the various road users and signaling systems will come from a data center.
The Edge Data Center – the expansion
The term “Edge Data Center” is understood to mean a decentralized data center. Is this the opposite of the traditional data center that supplies servers from a central location? The Edge Data Center complements traditional datacenters by covering local aspects such as regional traffic coordination. This means that data can be transferred, processed and sent back with short latency periods (i.e. in real time). These Edge Data Centers are likely to be built along highways and in areas with a high population density. They will be connected to the central data centers via conventional fiber-optic lines.
The network of Edge Data Centers must be closely knit. The Edge Data Centers will barely be able to meet the stringent requirements of conventional data centers; however, they will focus more on local proximity than data volumes. Compromises will have to be made in the choice of location and in security. Multiple network connections and the supply of power and cooling systems may be possible, but only at horrendous costs, which is why he have to ask ourselves whether we want a higher density of Edge Data Centers or greater security? A higher density would result us in being able to cope with outages.
Our future business?
There is enormous demand for traditional data centers from hyperscalers such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft. All of the main data center providers are investing in new facilities with greater performance capabilities. Long-term contracts are mostly being used to secure the traditional business. The investment and development being made in Edge Data Centers will certainly be thoroughly examined before a strategic decision is made.
