Swiss debut for 100% recycled aluminum

Our Green Metro-Campus Zurich comprises three state-of-the-art data centers and a business park. The campus is characterized by high energy efficiency and sustainability. This is evident in our latest project: We use 100% recycled end-of-life aluminum in the facade elements of the South office building, aligning with the principles of the circular economy.
Carbon footprint reduced by factor of 40
Compared to primary aluminum, 100% recycled end-of-life aluminum reduces the CO2 footprint by a factor of 40. This results in the savings of over 167 tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to 890,000 driven car kilometers or 73 flights from Zurich to New York.
The project is a collaboration between Green, Implenia, Ernst Schweizer, and Hydro Building Systems.

What distinguishes the new material?
When recycling end-of-life aluminum, only 5% of the energy required to produce primary metal is needed. As aluminum is a robust and durable material, it can be recycled almost indefinitely - without any loss of quality. Recycled end-of-life aluminum is obtained from installed aluminum that has been in use for decades.

Practicing Circular Economy
The facade elements for our new office building are manufactured by Ernst Schweizer AG. The aluminum is produced by the Norwegian Hydro Group, currently the only manufacturer capable of producing 100% end-of-life aluminum with an almost zero CO2 footprint.

The South office building is being constructed to Minergie standards, equipped with electric charging stations, and heated using climate-neutral waste heat from the data center.
