Outlook New on Windows 11 and Hosted Exchange

Note: This help article applies only to Hosted Exchange. If you are not sure which email service you use, you can find more information in the following article.

Hosted Exchange and Outlook (New)

Microsoft installs Outlook (New) by default on many Windows 11 systems. This application was primarily developed for Microsoft accounts and Microsoft 365 services.

For Hosted Exchange, full Exchange functionality is currently not available in Outlook (New) if the Hosted Exchange account is not provided directly by Microsoft.

Currently, the account can only be connected using POP or IMAP. Typical Exchange functions are not available when using these protocols.

Limitations of Outlook (New)

  • Calendars are not synchronised with full Exchange functionality.
  • Contacts are not synchronised with full Exchange functionality.
  • Tasks are not available with full Exchange functionality.
  • Automatic Exchange setup may fail.
  • Sign-in or synchronisation problems may occur.
  • Exchange functions are unavailable or only available to a limited extent.

Microsoft has not currently announced a date for changing or resolving this behaviour.

Recommended Procedure

  1. Check whether you are using Outlook (New) or Outlook Classic.
  2. If possible, use Outlook Classic for Hosted Exchange.
  3. Set up the Hosted Exchange account according to the official setup instructions.
  4. After setup, check the synchronisation of emails, calendars and contacts.

If Outlook Classic is already installed on your device, its use is recommended for Hosted Exchange. In many cases, you can switch directly from Outlook (New) to Outlook Classic.

Alternatively, Outlook Classic can be reinstalled.
