What can I do if my apartment does not have an OTO outlet?

The process typically works as follows: You order a fiber-optic Internet plan, the network operator or an authorized installation company runs the fiber from the building connection to your apartment and installs the OTO outlet. The Internet connection can then be activated.

Before ordering, carefully check whether an outlet is already installed. It may be located in an inconspicuous place, such as the living room, entrance area, or multimedia cabinet. Who decides and who pays if the building is not connected to fiber?

The property owner decides whether the building will be connected to fiber, not an individual tenant. In Switzerland, there is no legal requirement for a building to be connected to the fiber-optic network.

As for costs, connecting a building is often free of charge when the network operator is carrying out its official fiber rollout in the area. If a fiber connection is requested later, outside this rollout phase, it is considered a subsequent connection. The property owner generally bears the cost. If you are a tenant, you should therefore contact the property management company or property owner first.

What alternative do I have without fiber?

If fiber is not available, Internet service can still be provided over the copper network, which is sufficient for many households. Green offers download speeds of up to 500 Mbps over copper. This is sufficient in most cases for web browsing, streaming, video conferencing, and working from home. An OTO outlet is not required for an Internet connection over the copper network.
